Environmental Monitoring
Regular monitoring of the environment on and around the Sellafield site has taken place since the 1950s. The primary objective of this programme is to produce an annual retrospective radiological dose assessment. This programme is a statutory requirement under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993, implemented through the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. The details of the programme are agreed with the Environment Agency.
A key requirement of the monitoring programme is the use of Best Available Technology (BAT) in order to optimise the protection of people and the environment, taking into consideration a wide range of matters including safety, security, government objectives and social and economic factors. We have demonstrated how BAT is being applied by writing a “BAT Case” which can be viewed here.
