Lifting the lid on Thorp

The lid was lifted on Thorp this week to allow the installation of a new Medium Active Salt Free Evaporator (MASFE).

Capenhurst decommissioning site reaches another world-class safety landmark

Capenhurst’s nuclear clean-up site has reached a world-class safety milestone of more than 1.5 million man hours of work – equivalent to more than four years – without any accidents resulting in an employee having to take more than three days off.

Human Performance Day hailed a success

Over 700 people took part in Sellafield’s first ‘Human Performance Day’ held on Thursday 6 December, organised to help raise employee awareness about the importance of utilising ‘human performance tools’ in an attempt to minimise human errors and improving operational performance.

'Meet the Buyer 'event

A ‘Meet the Buyer’ event was held at the Sellafield Visitors Centre on 14 November aimed at enabling West Cumbrian firms to tap into nuclear decommissioning contracts. Over 200 people including representatives from tier 3 and 4 suppliers turned up to the event to meet tier 2 suppliers (those that deal directly with Sellafield Ltd) and register an interest in bidding for potential work. Speaking about the event, Eva Watson Graham said: “The event went very well and we had a fantastic turn out. There were 33 stands from suppliers ranging from local business, to potential Parent Body Organisation bidders. I hope that everyone who attended found the event useful.”

Glovebox modification suggestion earns Sellafield worker a national prize

Sellafield worker, Tony Briscoe, a mechanical fitter in the Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP), has won a national award at the ‘IdeasUK’ annual conference for his modification suggestion to a glovebox which has saved the company in excess of £100,000. Tony won the award for ‘best suggestion in the private sector’ at the awards ceremony which took place at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Chester.

Date Agreed For Historic Calder Hall Towers Demolition

The Calder Hall Towers Demolition Team received excellent news today with the receipt of the Licensed Instrument, the final consent document from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to allow the demolition to go ahead. The date for the demolition of the four giant cooling towers can now be confirmed as Saturday 29th September. The team are now working full steam ahead on the final preparations for the day.

Another step closer for towers demolition

PNTL launches the Pacific Heron

The launch of a new INF 3 class vessel, the Pacific Heron, for the Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL) fleet took place today in Japan. Japanese shipbuilders Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, is currently building the Pacific Heron at Tamano shipyard, where the launch by sliding the vessel, stern first, down the slipway took place in front of a number of senior European and Japanese industry representatives.
