Underwater success

A challenging subsea project to replace and install diffusers to the operational sealines (diffusers are used to help further disperse liquid effluent prior to final discharge to sea) has been completed by British Nuclear Group’s Decommissioning Projects, working with specialist contractors, Land & Marine, in just over six weeks.

Part of British Nuclear Group’s care and maintenance management programme for the sealines, this work involved the fabrication of two new diffusers, mobilisation of specialised marine contractors and a self-sustaining dive platform.

Work included the recovery and size reduction of the old diffusers, placing of four concrete support blocks for the diffusers and final installation and commissioning of these new diffusers.

Dive operations took place around the clock with specialist diving contractor Land and Marine, utilising their vessel, Union Beaver, to carry out this work.

Alan Prescott, Head of Site Projects, Decommissioning, said: “The safe and successful completion of this project demonstrates our ability to integrate with the supply chain and deliver a complex and diverse range of projects. Credit goes to the Decommissioning Site Project’s team and their supporters who worked hard to ensure delivery in a very short window of opportunity.”

Project Manager, Ken Riddell, added: “I would like to thank Land & Marine and their sub-contractors Atlas Divers, along with the British Nuclear Group project support team for all their hard work during the tight execution phase. Key to the success was the excellent engineering and co-ordination work carried out prior to mobilising the sub contractor. This ensured there were no surprises throughout the subsea work.”
