Safety scheme benefits school

St James’ Infant School in Whitehaven has benefited from British Nuclear Group’s Waste Handling Facility’s Safety Accumulator Scheme. The facility has achieved its first safety milestone by completing the first phase of construction without an accident, working with AMEC.

Lee Gainford, AMEC, nominated St James’ Infant School to receive a donation from the scheme and his nomination was selected on this occasion. Following recent vandalism at the school the ‘Friends of St James’, a parent fund- raising group, is helping the school by raising £10,000 to improve security and to provide a new library room.

Phil Bound, Construction Manager, British Nuclear Group, praised the workers for their success:” This is an outstanding achievement by the British Nuclear Group and AMEC team who have worked closely together to ensure everybody on this tight construction site went home safely. Everybody  working on the project should be very pleased as achievements to date are due to the team embracing a positive safety culture to achieve the first safety milestone for the project, which has also benefited the ‘Friends of St James’ parent funding group.  Well done.”

The Friends of St James’ were nominated by AMEC’s Lee Gainford, who is pictured, from left to right with Roy Kirk (British Nuclear Group) Phil Grisedale (AMEC) and Jimmy Pearson (AMEC), from the Waste Handling Facility Project at Sellafield.
