1,000,000 man hours without a lost time accident at Capenhurst

On Monday 30 July 2006, British Nuclear Group\'s decommissioning team at Capenhurst passed the milestone of 1,000,000 manhours spent on decommissioning and clean-up work without a lost time accident (LTA). During those 1,000,000 manhours, the team has:

  • disposed of over 8,000,000 kg of contaminated waste off site
  • transferred almost 200,000 litres of residues for successful uranium recovery
  • demolished over 60,000 m2 of building footprint

Ian Mason, Head of Decommissioning for the site, said: "This is a stunning achievement and is a credit to all individuals, directly and indirectly, who have contributed to this performance. The numbers above indicate the sheer scope/size of the operations we have been carrying out during this time, and the inherent conventional and radiological hazards that we have had to address."

"As always, the challenge will be to maintain this standard and ensure no harm to any of our employees and contracting community. I\'m sure we will continue to excel."
