Commercial Director named as US Consul

Sellafield’s Commercial Director, Steve Morgan, was sworn in as a Consul to the United States Navy for Whitehaven, by the Mayor of Copeland on Saturday 16 June.

The ceremony took place at the Copeland Centre, Whitehaven, as part of the Whitehaven Maritime Festival celebrations. Steve was sworn in by the Mayor of Copeland, Ann Faichney, on-board the Grand Turk, which was moored in Whitehaven Harbour throughout the Festival.

Captain Scott Bailey and Commander Mike Ryan were present from the United States Navy, and were presented with commemorative miners lamps to mark the occasion. The event was witnessed by the Whitehaven Maritime Committee and the main sponsors of the festival.

A retired Rear Admiral in the United States Navy Reserve, Steve served in Vietnam, Haiti and the Balkans, receiving numerous decorations including the Legion of Merit and the Defence Superior Service Medal. Currently he is serving as President of Whitehaven’s Sea Cadet unit, TS Bee.

Speaking about his new appointment as Consul, Steve said: “I am delighted to represent my own home country, and it is a great opportunity for us at Sellafield to contribute to our local community.”

Sellafield was a major sponsor of this year’s Festival, contributing £50,000 to the event which took place over the same weekend.
