Sellafield Ltd wins 'positive action award'
Sellafield Ltd was recently honoured at the ‘Positive Action Awards North West 2007’ for illustrating exemplary practice in the fields of employment, service delivery and individual merit.
The awards recognise employers, businesses, service providers or individuals for promoting independence, delivering accessible and/or inclusive services, or maintaining exceptional employment practices for disabled people and their carers.
Carl Lewthwaite, a process worker and shop steward based at Sellafield, attended the awards ceremony held yesterday at The Halton Stadium in Widnes, Cheshire on behalf of the company.
The lead Disability Champion for Sellafield Ltd, Carl was nominated to receive an award in the ‘large business class’ on behalf of the company, by local Disability Employments Advisor for Whitehaven, Lynne Wilson.
In the award nomination application form Lynne commented: “Carl deserves special mention for his hard work, tenacity and dedication to the role, despite challenges presented by his own disability.”
Disability Champions have a number of roles including raising awareness of disability issues, conducting access audits of buildings, documents and policies, negotiating ‘reasonable adjustments’ as well as liaising with external organisations and other Champions.
On winning the award, Carl said: “It was a great honour for me to pick up this award on behalf of the company. I want to thank Sellafield Ltd for allowing me to carry out this important role and to Lynne for nominating me! We still have a long way to go before we reach what is know as "best practice" in this field but this is certainly a great start in the right direction. I am very pleased that the work Sellafield Ltd, the Disability Champions and myself have been doing is getting noticed at a national level. I would also like to thank everybody that has supported me during my time in this role, especially Paul Shawcross of the Prospect Union.”
