Barry Snelson with his family outside Buckingham Palace

Sellafield Ltd’s Managing Director, Barry Snelson, picked up his MBE at Buckingham Palace on Friday 2 November, in recognition of his services to the nuclear industry.

Barry spoke of his shock and surprise when he found out he had been awarded the title earlier this year. Speaking back in June he said: “I hope that this is seen as recognition that Sellafield is making steady progress to my goal of it becoming the most respected nuclear facility in the world, a goal which the whole workforce are working hard to make a reality. I thank them for their continued efforts.”

Barry made the trip to Buckingham Palace with his family. Speaking about the day he said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience which had all the grandeur imaginable. I hope this honour is seen as a token of all of the skills of all of the people of Sellafield Ltd."

Praising the contribution Barry has made to the company and the industry, BNFL Chief Executive, Mike Parker, said: “Barry has dedicated many years to the company and wider industry. Under his stewardship, Sellafield has made great strides in the new world under the Nuclear Decommissioning
Authority.

“He has also worked tirelessly towards the goal of Sellafield becoming the first operator of a nuclear reprocessing facility to join the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), an organisation dedicated to improving the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. This goal has now been realised and is a tremendous achievement.”
