Dinner with the PM for Amy
Sellafield’s GEN II apprentice Amy Ireland, was lucky enough to be invited to dinner with Prime Minister Gordon Brown at No 10 Downing Street last week, following an invite from Copeland MP, Jamie Reed.
Mr Reed was one of 75 MPs who had been asked by Gordon Brown to join him, bringing along with them ‘an inspirational young person’ from their constituency.
Amy, who works in the Control Systems Engineering Department at Sellafield, was nominated to attend the event by GEN II. Mike Smith, Managing Director of GEN II has described Amy as “an excellent role model for young women in engineering” and her tutors say that she is an outstanding student, armed with a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Speaking about her recent visit to No 10 Downing Street Amy said: “I was surprised how funny he was, he gave a speech about young people which was really humorous. 10 Downing Street was bigger than I thought, there were lots of rooms, and it was really interesting. I was there for two hours and everyone got the chance to get their photo taken with Gordon Brown. He told us that afterwards he was going to visit the Queen!”
Jamie Reed MP said: “Amy was a superb ambassador for apprentices everywhere and for West Cumbria in general at No.10. The Prime Minister was particularly pleased to welcome a female apprentice, particularly one who is training to work in the nuclear industry. I was personally very impressed with Amy - she has a superb career ahead of her."
Sellafield’s Apprentice Programme Manager John Fleming congratulated Amy on her recent visit by adding: “We are delighted that Amy was chosen to represent Sellafield Ltd for this prestigious event hosted by the Prime Minister. Amy is working to a high standard, is well motivated and is extremely proactive in her apprenticeship; she is a credit to her family and collegues at work.”
Amy will be returning to London again in the New Year with the other GEN II apprentice award winners as they visit Jamie Reed for a VIP tour of the House of Commons and Big Ben.
