Sellafield Ltd response to the Government White Paper on Managing Radioactive Waste Safely
The decision on where a long term radioactive waste repository is located is a matter for Government, not Sellafield Ltd. While that process is taking place, Sellafield's role as a key player in Britain's nuclear future is to store safely and securely radioactive waste pending the availability of such a repository.
The substantial amount of capacity for interim waste storage at the site, together with the unique skills base to continue managing that material safely, will help facilitate a rigorous site selection process for a repository and emphasise Sellafield's strategic importance to the future of the nuclear industry in the UK.
