Sellafield Ltd hosted the 14th Annual Conference of the UK Monte Carlo Users Group (MCNEG 2008) at the Birchwood Conference Centre at Risley. Some 80 delegates from 8 countries attended with 20% attendance from overseas. These delegates are working in the field of nuclear codes and data, twenty four scientific and technical papers were presented during the conference. Chair of the organising committee, Paul Hulse said, “Monte Carlo codes are used in a number of applications, Sellafield Ltd use them in criticality and shielding assessments in support of safety cases. More widely they are used for planning radiotherapy treatments in cancer therapy, design of instruments for space vehicles, reactor design, etc.”

Andrew Cooper Project Manager for the Nuclear Code Development (NCD) said “This conference has been very important in supporting the maintenance of nuclear capability required for both operations and decommissioning.” Co-located with the conference was a two-day workshop on nuclear codes. Four groups provided training in the use of their codes. They were Serco, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Transpire and Visual Editor Consultants. Serco’s codes which are used throughout the UK nuclear industry are produced in collaboration with Sellafield Ltd as part of the NCD collaboration.

With this conference Sellafield Ltd have maintained and developed links with the UK and international nuclear codes community, obtained some free training in various codes for our employees, whilst helping fulfil part of the NDA's long term mission to maintain the skills necessary for decommissioning.
