You’re hired! Sellafield Ltd and West Cheshire College launch apprentice scheme
Sellafield Ltd’s site at Capenhurst has joined forces with West Cheshire College to launch a new apprentice scheme backed by business supremo Alan Sugar.
The Government-funded scheme, which is open to school leavers, represents the first intake of apprentices on to the site for 14 years and will combine college and workplace training in the fields of engineering and business administration.
Phil Malem, Sellafield Ltd’s head of site at Capenhurst, said: “We’re working hard to create a great new future for the site that will offer fantastic opportunities for our employees, the local community and our customer, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
“We are committed to the success of the community and with West Cheshire College we’re able to offer a superb opportunity on this occasion. Our current employees tell us that Capenhurst is a place where they love to work, so we’re expecting exceptionally high demand for these placements.”
West Cheshire College Principal Sara Mogel said: “The apprenticeship programme is a growing training programme which offers tremendous opportunities for both apprentices and businesses.
“It’s great news for the area and clearly demonstrates that, despite the current climate, businesses are still recruiting. Training during a downturn is essential for businesses of all sizes so that we are ready for economic growth.
“We are delighted to be working with Sellafield Ltd to maintain the flow of opportunities for young people in our area.”
Engineering apprentices will spend a year in the College, before spending four years on site taking part in structured workplace learning in one of the UK’s most high potential industrial sectors. Business administration apprentices will train for a year.
The government funding is also boosted with a basic salary package from Sellafield Ltd, including incremental pay rises over the duration of the apprenticeship. A job is not guaranteed upon the completion of the apprenticeship but it is a great opportunity to get paid while receiving great career development.
