Riding on a SEAs of success
Sellafield Ltd’s Pauline Farrell, was recently presented with a Highly Commended Award for Most Dedicated STEM Ambassador at a national award ceremony in the House of Lords.
The award was given by STEMNET in recognition of her role as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Ambassador and an inspirational role model to young people across the region.
At the same ceremony the Cumbria STEM Centre who work closely with Pauline, and who nominated her for her award, were also presented with a Highly Commended Award for Best Contract Holder – a double whammy for Cumbria!
The awards were organised by the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Network (STEMNET) to celebrate the continuing success of the STEM Ambassadors programme and to recognise some of their most inspirational role models.
All those shortlisted were nominated by teachers or others involved in the Network across the UK.
Speaking about her award Pauline said: “It’s been a really exciting day and I was delighted and honoured to receive the nomination by Cumbria STEM Centre and then be given this award. However, we have almost 200 qualified Ambassadors in the company who work tirelessly with local schools, giving their time and enthusiasm to countless projects every year and I want to, once again, thank them all for their hard work. I also want to thank Tony Gill, Wilma Buckley and everyone else at the Cumbria STEM Centre and say how delighted I am that they also took an award. I look forward to continuing to work with them for many more years.”
Sellafield Ltd’s head of public affairs, Shirley Williams, said: “The STEM Ambassadors programme has been a great success for us and for the schools and Pauline’s hard work with the project has been the major driving force behind it. Pauline is an integral part of our team and the work she does in the schools and with young people in West Cumbria is first class”.
The STEM Ambassadors programme was established in 2002 by the Government and is managed by STEMNET. It gives young people the opportunity to meet real-life role models and to be inspired about the possibilities of careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.
