2009 North West Newspaper Awards nominees announced

Sellafield Ltd is delighted to announce the shortlist of nominations for the 2009 North West Newspaper Awards.

This event is now in its eighteenth year, and once again record entries have been received in all categories.

Iain Irving Director Stakeholder Relations said: “We are delighted to receive so many entries, this represents the amount of talent there is around the North West.

“The judges had a difficult task to come up with the shortlist, given that there were more than 130 entries to be considered and the standard was so high across the board.

“These may be difficult times for the newspaper industry, but the reporting across our regional daily and weekly newspapers, and indeed their websites, continues to be of the very best quality.”

The awards, which are sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and organised through the North West region of the Society of Editors, recognise achievements in the following categories:

News Reporter of the Year Photographer of the Year
Feature Writer of the Year Young Journalist of the Year
Daily Newspaper of the Year Sports Reporter of the Year
Weekly Newspaper of the Year
Daily Newspaper Website of the Year
Newspaper of the Year (circ up to 20,000)
Weekly Newspaper Website of the Year

Prizes money is £700 for the winners in each individual category, £150 for each of the two runners-up, with trophies for the newspaper and websites categories.

All the winners of the 2009 Awards will be announced at a special presentation lunch at St David’s Park Hotel near Chester on Friday 19 June 2009.

The judges in this year’s competition were Professor Peter Cole Sheffield University, retired editor Mervyn Kay and Richard Catlow, from The Society of Editors.
