Evaporator D alliance Team achieves 500,000 man hours without a first aid case
The Evaporator D project alliance team at Sellafield have reached a major milestone of 500,000 man hours without a single first aid case, a tremendous achievement for everyone involved in the project.
Achieved during a stage of intensive civil construction and a period of unprecedented wet weather, the team completed a number of project milestones, including the receipt and setting up of two self erecting tower cranes.
Tom McClain, project manager, said: “This is truly an exemplary performance and I want to add my congratulations to all of you for a job well done. I have never been on a project with this type of safety record and I am proud of all of you and proud to be a part of this team. This is just outstanding.
“It has been said that safety is a state of mind and it's obvious that all of you have safety on the mind. Now is not the time to let up, but the time to rethink how we have gotten this far and plan to safely reach the next 500,000 hours.”
Fran Williams, EHS&Q Director at Sellafield Ltd and Charles Sweeney, CEO for Costain, Oil, Gas and Process Ltd (COGAP) visited the Evaporator D project. In recognition of this outstanding safety success and on behalf of COGAP, Charles presented the team with a cheque for £5,000 which will be donated to the West Cumbria Flood Relief effort.
Rob Phillips, Costain construction manager, Evaporator D said: “Costain are tremendously proud to achieve 500,000 man-hours without a first aid accident, something that we believe has not been achieved before at Sellafield. We have donated this cheque to the workforce to celebrate their achievement and efforts in driving a positive safety culture. This will be passed to the Cumbria flood fund on behalf of the project team”.
Fran added: “The achievement of 500,000 man hours without even a minor injury is a huge accomplishment of which everyone associated with the project can be proud. I am pleased for everyone involved that the project remains injury free and I look forward to the next 500,000 hour without a LTA celebration.”
As a further thank you the project provided the team with a free breakfast and lunch on the day of the celebrations. Both the donation to the flood relief effort and the meals were greatly appreciated by all concerned.
