Shipment of highly active waste arrives in The Netherlands
Sellafield Ltd and International Nuclear Services, working in partnership, are in the process of transporting a flask of solid highly active waste to The Netherlands. This is a continuation of the programme of repatriating foreign waste to overseas customers, a programme which is fulfilling contractual obligations and also UK Government policy.
The next phase of the transport of the waste will be by road, which is a tried and tested, safe and secure method. It will be undertaken by International Nuclear Services, the world’s leading transporter of nuclear material, which has an unparalleled safety record of more than 40 years and more than five million miles without any incident involving the release of radioactivity.
The waste is in a solid glass form, packaged inside 28 stainless steel canisters, which in turn sit within an extremely robust 100te transport flask. This flask is built to stringent international standards and is sealed, tested and secured before being transported. This ensures that it provides the shielding required to contain the radioactivity and to protect our employees, the public and the environment.
The vessel carrying the flask arrived at the port of Vlissingen last night.
The transport itself is taking place in accordance with all national and international regulations and has been licensed by the UK government and that of The Netherlands.
From Vlissingen harbour the waste will be transported by truck to the HABOG store at Vlissingen, operated by COVRA, where it will be stored safely and securely.
