Sellafield offshore particle data collection

Beach monitoring activities being undertaken as part of an ongoing programme

As part of the ongoing programme of beach monitoring for radioactive particles, Sellafield Ltd is required to 'develop a programme of work to undertake the assessment of offshore areas for radioactive particles.'

In support of this requirement, Sellafield Ltd has awarded a contract with Westlakes Scientific Consulting and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) to improve hydrodynamic modelling of the offshore environment.

A key part of this work is the collection of new data on sub-surface conditions out at sea.

In order to do this, a mooring buoy will need to be deployed off the Sellafield coast. Before this can be deployed, an application must be made to the Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

This application has now been made and a notice issued to inform mariners of plans to deploy the mooring buoy from 15th April 2010 to 15th October 2010.  To view the notice, please click here
