PM invites IAEA officials to Sellafield

Sellafield Site

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has invited International Atomic Energy Authority officials to inspect the Sellafield site in the near future as part of UK backing to a US-led move to secure all fissile material around the world.

Mr Brown, speaking to the Foreign Press Association, said reducing nuclear proliferation was one of five great global challenges, along with securing economic recovery, reducing the rate of climate change, fighting terrorism and turning the tide of poverty.

He also took the opportunity to launch a National Nuclear Centre of Excellence to help efforts to secure the safe, global expansion of civil nuclear power.

In response to the comments the company has issued the following statement:
“Sellafield Ltd is happy to work with the site owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, in support of the recently-announced International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission to Sellafield.

“The mission will benchmark robust and comprehensive civil nuclear security measures currently in place on-site against international best practice and offers the opportunity for two way learning.”
