Sellafield Ltd makes Independent Living shortlist
Sellafield Ltd has been shortlisted to receive an award at the Independent Living Awards 2010 thanks to the organisation’s ongoing commitment to equal opportunities.
The organisation will find out if it has been successful in the Good Practice in Employing Disabled People (Public and Private sector) at a ceremony in Manchester on 16 June.
The award has been created to recognise an organisation that has shown excellence in the recruitment, retention, and progression of disabled employees. To reach the shortlist stage Sellafield Ltd provided the judging panel with evidence of barrier removal in the organisation’s policies, procedures and practices supported by appropriate training.
Organisers describe the event as an opportunity to showcase those initiatives that have led the way in supporting disabled people to be independent. Awards will be made to organisations which can evidence innovation and commitment beyond what is currently accepted as good practice.
Sellafield Ltd’s Company Disability Advisor, Carl Lewthwaite, said: “Once again I am overwhelmed that our organisation has been recognised for its hard work with our employee relations in helping our employees who have forms of disabilities.
“The judging panel have been impressed with our structure within of having a full time advisor who works independently on behalf of the employer and its employees, to give independent and impartial advice around the employees’ rights under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and our legal obligations as an employer.
“All this work is done as a team effort within the organisation and I would just like to use this opportunity to thank all the staff in our occupational health department, case management team, human resources, the site Chaplains, our site disability champions, the Trade Unions as all of whom play a big part in resolving any issues when we look to deal with these cases and all the staff in the Union Learning Centre which has become a centre of excellence in helping our employees with learning difficulties such as dyslexia. I am delighted that we have reached the final part of the awards and if we win on the night it will be a bonus”.
