Sellafield Ltd becomes full member of the World Association of Nuclear Operators
At a recent Extraordinary General Meeting in WANO Paris Centre, Sellafield Ltd became a full member of WANO.
Bob Jones, Programme Manager Nuclear Safety, and EHS&Q delivery, Sellafield Ltd who represented us at the meeting on 16 June, said: "It was both a pleasure and a privilege to represent Sellafield Ltd at this meeting and hear that our application to become full member has been approved by the WANO Governing Board."
Sellafield Ltd has been involved with the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) since 2002 when Thorp was the first plant to benefit from a peer review. We subsequently enjoyed a trial membership in 2004, becoming joint members in 2006.
In recent months WANO has been finalising the changes they are making as an organisation to meet the changing structure of the nuclear industry, where national boundaries are being broken down and generating companies are becoming international in their makeup.
Bob added: "WANO has made changes to its organisation because it wants to be even more proactive in the delivery its mission - ‘to maximise the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants worldwide by working together to assess, benchmark and improve performance through mutual support, exchange of information, and emulation of best practices.
"Through our membership we have access to a vast wealth of knowledge and experience and benefit from this directly through receiving and participating in WANO missions. With membership the obligations upon us increase but opportunity to have a say in how WANO is run will also increase."
