Sellafield golfer putts himself on TeeV
Sellafield employee worker, Rhys Hatton, has hit the tee and ended up on television.
Rhys, who works in engineering support in the Fuel Handling Plant, has been playing golf since he was 14. He recently made the final of the Trilby Tour Championship in London, beating over 120 fellow golfers in a gripping one-day 18 hole regional tournament in Yorkshire.
Rhys said: “I am a member of Ulverston golf club and play off a handicap of one. The event was played over eight regional areas, on different dates and the top twelve from each event qualified for the final, which is being televised later this year.
“As I was the winner of the regional event l was given automatic entry into the final and, as a gesture from William Hunt, the tournament sponsor, l had a custom made suit given to me from Savile Row.”
The final was held at the Buckinghamshire golf club in London last month and the top twelve from each regional event played for the title of the 2010 Trilby Tour champion. Rhys tied for eighth place.
Rhys added: “Each regional champion also got entry into the professional Trilby event which was held the following day, where I finished a respectable twentieth. There were a few famous golfing faces there on the day, Phil Archer, Scott Drummond and Sam Osborne.
“The win will give me a lot of confidence in future events but I don't have any plans for entering any other large competitions. I have already said I am not entering the event next year as I am going out on a high. I am going to caddy for my friend who caddied for me this year. I would like to say thank you to Stobbarts Ltd who helped me with the sponsorship.”
The Trilby Tour, which is shown on Sky Sports 4, will be televised on 4 October at 6.30pm.
