All the President’s men
Sellafield Ltd’s Panos Frangos and Simon Hughes from the company’s operational research group are celebrating this month after winning the President’s Medal at the Operational Research Society Annual Conference.
Panos and Simon were awarded the medal for their presentation on Sellafield’s Pile Fuel Cladding Silo Project beating stiff competition from both British Telecom and Corus Strip Products.
The President’s Medal is awarded for the entry which, in the judgement of the panel, makes the best contribution to the practice of Operational Research, taking into account the submitted material, the quality of the work, the quality of the presentation and the opinion of the audience.
The specific judging criteria included the level of demonstrable benefit, the intellectual and novel content of the solution, the likely longevity of the solution, and the excellence of the operational research process.
Speaking after the presentation, Panos said: “This award is a fantastic recognition of all of the quality work the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo Project Team and our group has put in over the last 5 years. It puts Sellafield Ltd on the map for delivering world class operational research services in a period where the nuclear industry is in renaissance. I must admit that this award is also satisfying and inspiring on a personal level.”
Winner Simon added: “It’s nice on a personal level to be recognised by your peers for good work, however positive reporting of work by the project team, the operational research group and the nuclear industry in general is very welcome.”
Panos and Simon will receive their award on 25 November at the Annual Blackett Memorial Lecture at the Royal Society in London.
