Sellafield golfers support Search 4 a Vaccine campaign
A cheque for £2,580, raised from the High Level Waste Plants (HLWP) Ryder Cup 2010, has been handed over to Meningitis UK.
Now in its fifth year, the recent competition at Whitehaven Golf Club attracted 64 golfers representing engineering and manufacturing teams.
The money raised from the golf day will go towards Meningitis UK’s ‘Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign’ which hopes to raise £7 million to fund vital research into developing a vaccine to protect against all strains of meningitis.
Steve Dayman, who founded Meningitis UK after his son Spencer died from the disease, said: “We’re really grateful to everyone at Sellafield who have helped raised a fantastic £2,580 towards our work. To generate so much in just one day is quite an achievement.
“Six families a week lose a loved one to meningitis. Because meningitis can kill in less than four hours and it is notoriously difficult to spot, we believe a preventative vaccine is the only way to spare people this heartache.
“Every penny raised by this event will go towards this single focus and our ultimate goal of eradicating meningitis.”
The HLWP Ryder Cup is now recognised across the site and guest players from other operating units and the contract community are taking part and contributing.
The engineering team won the contest 9-7, retaining the cup for the fifth consecutive year.
Thanks are extended to Sellafield Ltd, Arco, Whitehaven Golf Club, Stobbarts, Shepley, Morsons, Costain, Impwood, White Young Green, Rustoleum, Black Beck Hotel, The Richmond, The Brook, Lake District Camper Hire and Dumfries and County Golf Club for their support as well as Hannah Simm and Daniel Boakes.
Plans are already in place for the 2011 Ryder Cup to be held on 9 September in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. If anyone would like to get involved or make a donation please contact either Jim Bell on 01946776449 or Steve Lee on 01946785199.
