Safety accolade for Sellafield's Andrew
Sellafield Ltd’s Andrew Eccles, a safety advisor and safety rep within the Infrastructure directorate, has won a prestigious award from the Trade Union Congress.
Andrew was awarded the Northern TUC Health and Safety Rep of the Year 2011, presented to him at a recent ceremony in Newcastle by TUC general secretary Kay Carberry.
Steve Nicholson, Sellafield Ltd’s branch secretary for Prospect nominated Andrew for the award in recognition to his commitment to the Dignity at Work policy, which was implemented at the beginning of 2010.
Steve said: “Over the years Andrew has been involved in many projects to help improve safety across the site and this year has been no different. The work he has done as a leader in reducing, and aiming to eradicate bullying and harassment has been over and above the realms of a safety rep. Andrew promotes and exemplifies the values of Prospect that there is no place for bullies at work, and that bullying and harassment will not be tolerated in our workplaces.”
“Receiving this prestigious award is a great honour,” said Andrew. “Juggling my busy day job as a senior safety advisor within Infrastructure safety team, and the demands of my Prospect safety rep role can be very challenging, as both roles require a high degree of interpersonal skills and professionalism.
“The modern role of a safety rep is one of continual development as we strive to keep pace with corporate and legislative changes. I believe safety reps have a significant role to play in the development and maintenance of a healthy safety culture.”
