WED Engineering reach one million man hours without a lost time accident
Mayfield School is to benefit from a £1,000 donation in celebration of two safety achievements at Sellafield.
Sellafield Ltd’s Waste and Effluent Disposition (WED) directorate has successfully completed two years worked without a construction lost time accident.
The time without an accident equates to over one million man hours – which is especially significant given the scope of work undertaken.
The Engineering OU employs approximately 300 people, including designers, project managers, construction and commissioning teams and, working in partnerships with the supply chain, manages a range of contracts in the region of £35 million annually.
In recognition of the achievement WED has agreed to donate £500 to Mayfield. The school will be further boosted by another £500 from one of WED’s supply chain partners, Shepley Engineering who themselves reached the target of one million accident free hours on the Sellafield site.
Steve Cowper, Construction Manager said, “Two years without a lost time accident in the field of construction is an incredibly significant achievement, the opportunities for accidents to occur are magnified within a construction environment and credit goes to everyone involved in delivering the projects throughout this two year period.
True collaborative working underpins our relationship with our contractors. We see our role as facilitating the safe delivery of the work through our supply chain and are constantly learning from them and them from us.”
Simon Wittridge, Director Head of Engineering, W&ED, commented – “A real factor in achieving this level of safety performance is the development of the group’s `Safety and Leadership plan’ which sets our standards for safety performance, Peer 2 Peers, construction safety, supply chain expectations and Learning from experience amongst others. Performance standards are embedded within individual’s Performance Management Agreements (PMA’s), ensuring everyone has simple and unambiguous standards and clear accountabilities.”
