Going for gold
Pauline Deans was presented with a gold award for her outstanding contribution to the work of Young Enterprise at the North West finals held at Manchester airport.
The award came as a shock to Pauline who was attending in her role as corporate responsibility manager for the company.
Pauline said: “I have been involved with Young Enterprise through my job for more than 10 years and have been a volunteer member on the Warrington Area Board since 2007. I was very surprised to be presented with the award, but it was nice to receive recognition for the work I do.
“The evening was a great affair. Celebrating in a huge hangar at Manchester airport with your table underneath one of the most famous supersonic aeroplanes was certainly a unique experience.”
Six teams of enthusiastic young entrepreneurs from across the North West also took part in the finals to compete for the coveted prize of Company Programme Team of the Year 2011. The teams from Cheshire, Cumbria, East Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire West and Merseyside were representing their counties as a result of winning their local events.
The competition involved setting up a trade stand, producing a company report and delivering a five minute presentation to the 200 plus audience detailing their experiences in setting up and running their own small businesses.
Sellafield Ltd’s Commercial Director Keith Case headed up the judges in what proved to be a very close run contest.
Keith said: “This is the third year I have judged the North West final; the quality of the teams has improved each year and I am again very impressed by the capability and standards of all the teams.”
The winning team ‘The company’ from Clitheroe Grammar School in East Lancashire will now travel to London to the national final at The Savoy Hotel. In the final they will compete for the title of UK Company of the Year 2011, £1000 and a visit to Stockholm to represent the UK in the European round of the competition.
Keith also presented the winning team of the Sellafield Ltd sponsored Young Engineer North West Customer Service Award to Simplistix from Carmel College in St Helen's, whose venture included selling ethical fruit cocktails.
Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise education charity, aiming to build a connected world of young people, business volunteers and educators, inspiring each other to succeed through enterprise.
Sellafield Ltd has a number of volunteers who act as business advisors and judges within the scheme.
