SMP closure
The NDA has today announced the closure of the Sellafield Mixed Oxide Plant (SMP). Click here to view the statement.
Sellafield Ltd is extremely disappointed that the NDA has decided to close SMP, but we recognise that the recent tragic events in Japan have left the NDA with no other option.
In line with the NDA’s decision, we have started to develop and implement plans to stop operations within SMP. In doing this, the safety of our workforce and the community is of paramount importance.
Our focus is the immediate and future wellbeing of the 600-plus employees who have worked exceptionally hard to achieve significant improvements in the operation and production of the plant since the take-over of the site by NMP almost three years ago.
Transitioning SMP from operations to closure will require further work, including processing of residue materials into a form suitable for long term storage, and plant clean out. This will mean that a significant number of employees will remain in their current role until this work is completed.
We will work with employee representatives to agree the best way to manage the transition process for all affected employees.
Sellafield Ltd has a significant work programme to deliver the NDA’s high hazard and risk reduction mission. The skills and expertise of the SMP workforce can play a valuable role in achieving this.
Safety will remain our priority throughout the transition process.
