Launch day of Engineering Education Scheme

Students on the Engineering Education Scheme

Sellafield Ltd is proud to be supporting six teams of students on the Engineering Education Scheme (EES).
The Engineering Education Scheme which links teams of four Year 12 students and their teacher with local companies to work on real, scientific, engineering and technological problems.

Sellafield engineers, Ian Wills, Adam Ridgway, Andrew Bennion and Mark Blackburn are working with two teams from St Benedict’s School, Whitehaven, on real Sellafield Ltd projects.

The engineers will visit their teams in school on a weekly basis from now until the three day residential which is taking place at Newcastle University in January 2012. During their stay the students will work in laboratory conditions on their prototypes whilst taking the opportunity to meet teams from other areas.

Andrew said: “Whilst carrying out maintenance work in the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) it is necessary to clear residual uranium out of the pipe work. While the current plant system works well, there is always room for improvement. The EES team are designing a system to improve this operating procedure".

Risley based engineers will be working with students from Culcheth High School, Abbey College, Priestley College and The Deanery which are all in the Cheshire area.

The culmination of the scheme will be a Celebration and Assessment day held at Newcastle University at the end of March 2012
