“Polar Bears” to take the plunge

New Year's Eve dippers

An annual charity fundraising event started several years ago by a Sellafield worker is going bigger and better this year.

The annual New Year's Eve dip in the sea at Whitehaven has been re-named the Golden Sands Polar Bear Club after the short stretch of sand near the Beacon at Whitehaven Harbour.

It is expected that up to 130 volunteers will undertake the dip for their chosen charity and up to 300 spectators will cheer them in at 12.30pm.

The Beacon will be providing soup to the dippers and selling hot dogs and soup to spectators. A Scottish Piper will pipe the brave volunteers into the water and a prize is on offer for the best fancy dress.

All participants will need to sign a waiver form before they are allowed to go in the water. Safety marshals and the RNLI will be supporting the event on the day.

It is hoped that the Polar Bears will raise around £20,000 for their chosen good cause.
