Raising awareness for mens health
Around our sites in November last year, those gents you would normally find sporting clean-shaven faces, all of a sudden donated their top lips to a worthy cause and sprouted moustaches.
Raising awareness for men’s health, specifically cancers that affect men, is serious business, but with Movember it was be done in a light hearted way.
Dave Park, Sellafield Ltd, said: “Our team name was ‘Power of the Stache’ and around 20 of us gave up shaving to let our moustaches grow and help change the face of men’s health.
“Movember is a very worthy cause, 37,000 cases of prostate cancer and more than 2,000 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year. These are just a couple of the unpleasant statistics.”
Also taking part were 21 ‘intrepid explorers’ from the Magnox Project team in Spent Fuel Management. Gareth Callendar, work package project manager, said: “We set off on a journey into masculinity in support of the charity Movember and spent the month cultivating our moustaches to raise awareness and funds. We managed to raise around £2,500.”
Meanwhile 23 members of the combined Sellafield Ltd and Doosan Power Systems SAV team raised over £2,000, while five Site Remediation and Decommissioning Project members, Steve Prescott, Dave Holburt, Danny McCusker, Richard Wilkinson and James Mawby raised almost £500.
