Superstructure success at Sellafield Ltd

Construction of the Waste Retrieval Facility

Significant progress has been made on the construction of the Waste Retrieval Facility at Sellafield.

The Waste Retrieval Facility is a priority project to enable historic waste to be retrieved from the 60-year-old Pile Fuel Cladding Silo. It is being built to the side of the existing structure and has involved fencing off a construction site, which brings with it many programme benefits.

Neil Crewdson, Head of Projects, said: “We’re cracking on with the priority project as part of our commitment to accelerate retrievals from the facility. The next milestone is to build the superstructure to the 10.4m level and this is the subject of the super stretch target with our customer.

“Everybody is committed in driving hard to achieve a start of retrievals date by 16 August 2017 and making the silo a huge success for the company.”

The project will require the construction of a 63te semi goliath crane to handle ‘Sellafield Packages’, housing a waste container of retrieved waste. A sub contract worth £2.7m has now been placed with the Clarke Chapman Group to deliver the crane by 31 August 2012.

The reinforced concrete superstructure and control room are scheduled to be completed by December 2012. The bespoke retrieval modules - which will provide the heart of the facility - will then be slotted into the superstructure, with the start of retrieval of the waste commencing in August 2017.
