Double safety celebration at Capenhurst
There’s been a double dose of safety success at Sellafield Ltd Capenhurst, with both the contractors and the site hitting major milestones.
Nick Welch, head of Capenhurst site said: “Not only have we achieved over 1,000 days without a contractor Lost Time Accident (LTA) but also reached 452 days without an LTA. I am proud of everyone on site for this achievement against a backdrop of some key scope targets.
“We pride ourselves as a site on our focus and drive on safety and this record demonstrates how well it is working. I have written to all the contracting firms on the site to thank them for their focus and involvement with safety while working at Capenhurst.”
The behavioural safety programme is a strong part of the safety culture at Capenhurst with both near miss and hazard cards being used as effective tools to prevent events and incidents before they happen.
Nick added: “The safety record on site has no doubt benefited from the Safety First campaign.
“Now in its sixth year the annual programme, which covers topics in quarterly themes, has grown with our workforce fully behind the initiative and continuing to drive a proactive safety culture into our daily activities.
“The success has most recently been recognised externally by RoSPA and also in the Safety Health Practitioner category at the IOSH awards.”
Spie Matthew Hall provide the facilities management service at Capenhurst. Their Operations Director, Bernard Aldous said: "This is a commendable achievement that could not have been achieved without the unending focus on health and safety behaviour by our staff and contractors.
