24 months without a Lost Time Accident for EPS3 project team

The continuing emphasis on safety by both Sellafield Ltd and the main contractor, Laing O’Rourke (LOR), on the Encapsulated Product Store 3 (EPS3) project, has resulted in the team recently completing 24 months without a Lost Time Accident (LTA).

Ewan Smith, Sellafield Ltd’s project manager said: “This significant accomplishment in the projects safety performance has been achieved through the application of a joint Sellafield Ltd & Laing O’Rourke safety improvement action plan.

“The plan includes safety targets which are set and monitored at the projects strategic safety forum which is chaired alternately by myself and the Laing O’Rourke project director. These targets are well publicised through the use of the project’s safety dashboard, which is seen as best practice by the Programme and Project Management Directorate.”

Ian Tongue EPS3 safety advisor, explained: “The concerted project effort, at all levels, to take responsibility for assessing risk, spotting hazards and most importantly removing them, has resulted in the project maintaining this optimum level of safety performance over a 24 month period."

Ewan added, “In the last 12 months the project has seen a significant increase in the number of hazard and near miss cards raised by the workforce. In addition to an increase in the number of cards being completed, more and more cards raised demonstrate that immediate corrective action is being taken by the individuals spotting the hazard. It is this behaviour that we need to build on in order to achieve the ultimate mission of a zero event workplace."
