Beach monitoring
The Environment Agency has placed a statutory requirement on Sellafield for monitoring of beaches between Ravenglass and St Bees using vehicle mounted monitoring equipment.

Calder Hall Decommissioning Challenge
Calder Hall, the world's first commercial nuclear power station, was officially opened in October 1956 by Her Majesty The Queen. After 47 years of generating electricity, enough to meet the average electricity demand of England and Wales for 3 months, Calder Hall finally ceased operation in March 2003.

Medium Active Salt Free Evaporator
After 10 years of operational life the Thorp reprocessing plant's existing Medium Active Salt Free Evaporator (MASFE) was nearing the end of its life. The MASFE is an important piece of plant used primarily to process Medium Active liquors, concentrating them down prior to them being sent for further evaporation and Vitrification into glass.

Multi Element Bottle Export Facility
A new Multi Element Bottle Export Facility started active commissioning in early 2008 which will allow for the removal of 400 empty multi element bottles, freeing up space for 1,000 tonnes of fuel in the Thorp’s ponds.

Combined Heat and Power Plant
The Combined Heat and Power Plant, which sits just outside the Sellafield site, provides the site with steam. In February 2008 one of the stacks was noticed to be leaning slightly. Impressive team working resulted in the safe dismantling of all three chimney stacks within twelve days.

Sealine Recovery Project
We have successfully removed three redundant pipelines running from the Sellafield site out into the Irish Sea, a significant project in the clean-up programme of the nuclear legacy.
