Beach Monitoring

Background

The Environment Agency has placed a statutory requirement on Sellafield for monitoring of beaches between Ravenglass and the Solway using vehicle mounted monitoring equipment. The monitoring work will take place during daylight hours depending on weather and tides. The work is being done by Nuvia Ltd on behalf of Sellafield Ltd. If Nuvia Ltd detect anything during the monitoring they will retrieve it and deliver it to Sellafield for analysis.

Challenge

This type of monitoring has been carried out since November 2006 when the equipment was trialed on local beaches. The report summarising the results of earlier monitoring can be found in the media centre section. Fortnightly updates of locations covered and any finds will be placed here with more detailed reports being provided once analysis of finds is complete.

Fortnightly Update 11 November 2008

We must stress that beaches remain safe to use for the duration of the monitoring.
