Nuclear Networking Lunch - ITER Project

Country: United Kingdom
Location: North East England
Venue: NOF Energy Offices
Contact: Jenna Gray - T: +44(0) 191 384 6464/For more information visit www.iter.org
Additional information: Nuclear Networking Lunch - ITER Project

Find out about opportunities with regards to the ITER Project and increase your contacts at this networking lunch.

The multi billion Euro ITER project being built in France, is the next step in fusion research and is one of the world’s largest international co-operative research and development projects.

The big challenge now is to identify, and encourage, UK companies to compete for international supply contracts for the construction and operation of the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER). The CCFE's Fusion and Industry team is responsible for ensuring that UK supply chain makes the most of the business opportunities arising from the ITER project.

The UK has a lot to offer to the ITER project in terms of high quality engineering, technology and other services. Tremendous commercial opportunities will arise from this world class fusion research project and NOF Energy are keen to introduce the supply chain to potential new business.

This networking event will provide you with an update on the ITER project along with current contract opportunities.

At this event, you will hear from Dan Mistry, Culham Centre Fusion Energy.

Presentation: 1: Open Street Map – How to Contribute and Use 2: Experiences of MapAction in Haiti

Country: United Kingdom
Location: Leeds
Venue: NTI Leeds,Old Broadcasting House, 148 Woodhouse Lane, LS2 9EN.
Contact: http://www.agi.org.uk/pooled/articles/BF_EVENTART/view.asp?Q=BF_EVENTART_318556
Additional information: Speakers: Tim Waters, OpenStreetMap; Anne-Marie Frankland, MapAction

This two part presentation will provide an overview of the ‘open source’ mapping and geodata phenomenon that is OpenStreetMap, explaining how anybody can collect data and how they can use it. We will then look at how MapAction recently used OpenStreetMap in Haiti to support emergency rescue and recovery operations.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free and open geodata project. It's quite easy to get started with the project, as there's a healthy ecosystem of tools and services that surrounds it. We will look at how to get started contributing to the project and how the data can be used. There are many routes whereby mapping data can be contributed. Some options range from tracing aerial imagery and historical maps, surveying in the field with consumer-grade GPS units, data imports from organisations, through to pencil on sketch maps! Tools are also available to help monitor and moderate changes. Using OpenStreetMap data is also easy, with solutions available for most needs. Up to data exports into ESRI Shapefile formats are available and online routing services can be found. Custom applications such as an automated bus route poster & destination finder has been made. Map renderers can be used to generate map tiles and there are tools for importing data onto mobile devices.

There are many possible uses for OSM data; recently during the Haiti Earthquake crisis, relief workers chose to use OSM as other maps were not as good, freely available, or able to easily and quickly updated.

Speaker Bios
Tim Waters is a freelance consultant and a member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation and Humanitarian OSM Team. He is currently working with historical maps, and also likes fuzzy vague geographies, cats, tea and time travel! Tim blogs at http://thinkwhere.wordpress.com

Anne-Marie Frankland has been a volunteer member of the MapAction team for the past five years, while her day-to-day employment has been within the GIS software industry. With MapAction, she has taken part in emergency missions to the Pakistan earthquake in 2005, the Java earthquake in 2006, the Pakistan IDP Crisis in 2009, and the Haitian earthquake earlier this year, together with a capacity building mission to Tajikistan in 2006.

MapAction is a non-governmental organisation that provides GIS and mapping services to the wider humanitarian community in the event of sudden onset disasters and complex emergencies. MapAction deploys teams of volunteer GIS and remote sensing professionals, trained in disaster response, who are on call 365 days per year. MapAction also builds disaster mapping capacity in vulnerable countries.
