James Fisher & Sons open day
Country: United Kingdom
Location: Sellafield
Venue: Sellafield Centre
Contact: Tonia Howland, 01946 823502 x 101
Additional information: James Fisher and Sons would like to invite you to an open day at the Sellafield Centre on the 16th of November.
In place the standard process of providing lengthy powerpoint presentations, we have instead assembled hands-on demonstrations that we believe better illustrate the wide capabilities and range of activities carried out by James Fisher companies in West Cumbria. These will hopefully stimulate discussions whereby a clearer vision of how we can better meet your requirements becomes more clearly understood.
We are committed to supporting the UK nuclear sector and in particular Sellafield Sites and are building our capability commensurate with our understanding of your industries needs. Our commitment is reinforced by recent acquisitions in Cumbria (Faber’s and its sister company Remac) and a multi million pound investment in new rig hall facilities in Egremont. Our Cumbrian workforce of some 80 nuclear engineers together with local design offices, service facilities and rig halls ideally places us to support Sellafield. This local team is backed up by well over a hundred nuclear engineers at our other design offices, manufacturing facilities and service centres throughout the UK. The services we provide to Sellafield range from mechanical design, CE&I, remote handling systems design and supply, radiometric instrumentation supply and services, X-ray systems and services, radiometric calibration, strain gauges and load cells, underwater ROVs and shipping services to fully serviced rig halls.
The doors will open at Midday and close at 3.00 pm. There will be a welcome and introduction to James Fisher from Tim Harris, the Executive chairman at 1pm.
Tea, coffee, soft drinks and a buffet lunch will be provided.

Powering Towards 2020: The Future of Power Generation in the UK
Country: United Kingdom
Location: London
Venue: Barbican
Contact: aysha.asif@publicservice.co.uk
Additional information: There is an inevitable energy crisis looming caused by unstable world supplies of gas and oil. Our reliance on fossil fuels and the continued inefficiency in both the production and usage of energy cannot continue. We need to be more self-sufficient and look to the knowledge and resources we have in the UK to create a long-term legacy of power generation, not only for the sake of the environment, but also a stable and thriving economy.
Government have pledged their support to tackling climate change by making targets for reducing the UK’s CO2 emissions more ambitious, and by increasing investment in the sector. Existing government policies have already enabled £50 billion of low-carbon investment over the three years to 2011, and an extra £1.4 billion has been made available for 2009.
Supported by the National Grid, CHPA, Micropower Council and the Global Energy Council, Powering Towards 2020 will look at the future of power generation in the UK, and at the currently available energy sources, as well as the alternatives to help meet the demands of future UK power consumption. These include nuclear, coal, wind, wave, solar, PV, ground-source, biomass, energy from waste, CHP and community heating.
