Our Nuclear History
We have around 50 years experience in the UK Nuclear Industry and has over 600 personnel. Our experience of providing services for plants to handle, treat and store radioactive wastes and in the provision of decommissioning services span the full history of commercial nuclear power development in Great Britain. This experience includes the Radwaste Plant Project for Sizewell B Power Station and various decommissioning projects at Sellafield.

Our company has been involved in the provision of services for most of the major production and waste management projects at Sellafield, commencing with SIXEP Effluent Plant, then the MASWEP Encapsulation Plants, and also the WVP Vitrification Plant. We also provided commissioning management teams for key sections of the THORP Reprocessing Plant and worked jointly with BNFL Springfields for the commissioning of the NOFC Fuel Plant.

The design and construction contracts for the Enhanced Actinide Removal Plant (EARP) and the Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) and Product Store (as leader of the KAT Nuclear JV) have also been executed by Aker Solutions, both over £130 million in value.

Nuclear Alliances/Framework Arrangements
Aker Solutions was involved in a five year partnering agreement with BNFL. This involved the provision of asset support and decommissioning related project services for various operating plants at Sellafield.

Other key experience includes the operation of a Magnox Waste Retrieval and Dissolution Plant at Dungeness ‘A’ Power Station for Magnox Electric employing alliancing principles. This work followed earlier testwork, design studies, concept design development, followed by a design and build project. Our involvement has spanned a 20 year period. We completed the Splitter Vaults decommissioning ahead of schedule and also executed other contracts for waste retrieval and dissolution of waste from the Lugs Vaults.

Working in Joint Venture with Carillion and Atkins (ACKtiv Nuclear JV) we have been involved in a series of important projects involving clean-up, decommissioning and rehabilitation of various waste storage facilities at Sellafield.

At Trawsfynydd we were appointed by Magnox Electric as one of 3 partners who are working in collaboration for the decommissioning of the Cooling Ponds Complex. [The Trawsfynydd Strategic Integrated Framework (TSIF)].

We also won a further framework contract associated with work at the Drigg LLW waste repository.

Recent Nuclear Contracts include:

• A new export facility within the Sellafield First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP).
• The Retrievals contract, providing systems for the removal of radioactive sludge and solid inventory from the FGMSP facility for subsequent safe treatment and storage.
• Retrieval and encapsulation of wet intermediate level wastes (ILW) at Hunterston A Site.
• A 2 stage engineering design and implementation contract for desludging of the Cartridge Cooling Pond (CCP) at Hunterson A.
